‘Tis the Season for Winter Beer

The only thing better than lounging in front of roaring fire on a cold winter’s night is lounging in front of a roaring fire with a cold winter beer! These winter selections will be the perfect finish (or middle; we’re not here to judge) to those chilly winter days:

21st Amendment Fireside Chat

A beer that FDR could be proud of, this winter ale is brewed like a classic, warming strong ale but with a subtle blend of hand-selected spices for just the right festive flair.

Affligem Noel

From the hallowed beer ground of Belgium comes this delicious winter ale that’s rich and dark like a dubbel yet sumptuous and smooth like a tripel.

Anderson Valley Winter Solstice

Creamy, smooth and terrifically drinkable, this winter warmer is an ideal pair for any holiday dish. Deep amber in color with an inviting aroma of spice and nutmeg, Winter Solstice perfectly balances subtle hops and fruity notes with the flavors of roasted caramel and a secret blend of winter spices (not even we know what they are and we’ve asked nicely).

Brooklyn Winter Ale

Based on the satisfying malty ales of blustery Scotland, this winter ale will have you looking on the bright side of things. Rich, Scottish malts bring deep bready flavors to a beer with a full copper color, a round, smooth palate, and brisk hopping that pulls the sweet malts into balance.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

A beer truly fit for a queen (or at least an empress) this Brooklyn classic is a version of the imperial stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. Three mashes are used in each batch of beer to achieve a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specially roasted malts.

Brooklyn Monster Ale

This classic barley wine is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt, spiced with aromatic hops, and then aged for four months. With a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma reminiscent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, and a soft, warming, complex palate, Monster Ale is a perfect way to keep warm on those chilly nights. Like all brandy wines, though, it packs a pretty serious punch at over 10% ABV so please enjoy responsibly.

Lost Coast Winterbraun

A richer, stronger version of Lost Coast’s signature Downtown Brown, Winterbraun is a full bodied English brown ale with a rich chocolate taste. Brewed with American pale malt and a mixture of caramel and chocolate malts, it’s then given a unique spicy flavor and aroma from Saaz hops grown in the Czech Republic.

Mt. Carmel Winter Ale

This festive ale is the perfect complement to the holiday season with its scents of spruce and ginger mingling with the flavors of orange-spiced bread. Brewed in Cincinnati, this is a hometown favorite of ours.

Ommegang Adoration

An authentic Belgian noel beer, Adoration is best enjoyed on a sleigh ride in a wonderland of snow (just make sure someone else driving).  Its dark malts give it lush, malty flavors and aromas, strongly complemented by coriander, cumin, mace, cardamom and grains of paradise spices. This is by no means a lightweight beer at over 10% ABV, so we recommend taking some extra time between sips to savor the flavor.

Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve

We’re fairly certain this is the preferred beer of the big guy himself (although he’s pretty tough to get a hold of). Whether or not this is a staple of the North Pole, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this double hopped red ale with a roasty, malty flavor and a well balanced spruce finish.

Rogue Yellow Snow IPA

While it’s never, ever a good idea to ingest yellow snow you find out on your lawn, it’s always a great idea to ingest any Rogue Yellow Snow you find in your fridge. Pale golden in color with a hoppy, fruity aroma, this seasonal IPA has a big hop flavor up front complemented by medium body and hoppyness mid-pallet and finishes with a characteristic, lingering bitterness.

Rogue Mogul Madness

An ode to skiers everywhere, this winter warmer is brewed using seven different hops and is described by Rogue brewmaster John “More Hops” Maier as being “layers of complex malt flavors and radically hopped.”

Smuttynose Winter Ale

Mellow and pleasantly complex, this perfect cold weather companion is a full-bodied, amber beer brewed with a special Trappist ale yeast. Stylistically reminiscent of a Belgian Abbey Double, it features fruity aromas and flavor, balanced by soft Crystal hops.

Victory Yakima Glory

This heavyweight battle between fresh, Yakima Valley hops and dark, roasted malts is resolved harmoniously as the flavors merge to deliver complex satisfaction with a warming edge. Bask in the “glory” of the bright and brassy hops!
