Brand Spotlight: Brewery Ommegang

For most of the 20th century, the quiet, Upstate New York town of Cooperstown was known for one thing: baseball. As the (alleged) birthplace of the national pastime and home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown is still known as the baseball capital of the world but since the turn of the century it’s beginning to be known for something else: beer. Cooperstown, you see, is also the home of one of America’s best craft breweries: Brewery Ommegang.

Founders Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield got their start in the beer business right out of college importing Belgian beers to the States. In 1997, they decided to give brewing their own Belgian-style ales a go and built Brewery Ommegang on an old, 136-acre hop farm. Today, Ommegang brews six year-round ales, all of which have won international acclaim from some of the biggest festivals in the beer world: Abbey Ale (’10 World Beer Cup – Gold), BPA (‘10 European Beer Star – Bronze), Hennepin (’04 Great American Beer Fest – Gold; ’07 European Beer Star – Gold), Rare Vos (’08 Great American Beer Fest – Bronze; ’12 World Beer Cup – Gold), Three Philosophers (’04 World Beer Cup – Bronze & ’11 European Beer Star), and Witte (’08 & ’10 World Beer Cup – Silver; ’11 Great American Beer Fest – Gold; ’11 European Beer Star – Bronze).

In addition to these six year-round offerings, you can also find these five Ommegang brews in various bars, restaurants, and stores across the state of Ohio this July: Art of Darkness, Biere D’Hougoumont, Fleur de Houblin, Gnomegang, and Rustica. Ommegang also has a line of beers unlike anything else in the business. In late 2012, Ommegang announced a partnership with HBO to produce beers inspired by its hit TV show Game of Thrones. While countless beers have been inspired by movies or TV shows, this is the first line of beers made in partnership with the creative minds behind the show. The first beer, Iron Throne Blonde Ale, was released just before the Season 3 premiere in March and was met with rave reviews and sold like wildfire. Recently, Ommegang announced the second beer, Take the Black Stout, which will premiere in the fall. Two more Game of Thrones beers will launch in 2014 and both Ommegang and HBO have hinted that even more may follow after that.
