Rhinegeist Takes Over Kentucky

Any beer lover who has spent any time in Cincinnati in the last few years has no doubt tasted or least seen Rhinegeist beer. Since exploding onto the scene in 2013, the teardrop shaped ghost logo of Rhinegeist can be found on taps or cans at just about every craft-friendly bar or restaurant in the Queen City and is even served at Great American Ballpark, the home of the Reds.

We’re proud to announce that we’ll be helping the Cincinnati brewery continue its meteoric rise as we begin distributing their beer throughout Kentucky! Rhinegeist has been available in the Commonwealth since December 2014 but with Rampant and Heidelberg’s larger distribution network, it will now reach every corner of the state.

As the German speakers among you have no doubt already figured out, “Rhinegeist” translates to the “Ghost of the Rhine,” an homage to neighborhood of Cincinnati that the brewery calls home: Over the Rhine. At the turn of the 20th century, Over the Rhine was a bustling neighborhood of 45,000 residents, most of whom were German immigrants, and some 38 breweries. The king brewer at the time was Christian Moerlein, who built a sizable bottling plant in the heart of the neighborhood in 1895. But the scourge of Prohibition shuttered the plant along with all the other brewers in the neighborhood nearly destroying the neighborhood’s proud brewing tradition in the process.

The plant along with the tradition would lie dormant until a recovering consultant and a silver-tongued dreamer fell in love with the building in 2013. Bob Bonder was fresh off building the successful Cincinnati coffee chain Tazza Mia when he convinced Bryant Goulding, who had been a sales rep for Anderson Valley and other breweries out west, to look at the old Moerlein bottling plant with him. They immediately saw the potential and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rhinegeist’s lineup of beers is constantly growing and changing but initially, Kentuckians will be able to choose from this diverse group of beers:

Cougar (Blonde Ale) Emergency Hop Kit (IPA) Fiction (Belgian Pale Ale)
Hustle (Rye Pale Ale) Panda (Oatmeal Stout) Steve (Black Ale)
Stryker (Triple IPA) Truth (IPA) Zen (Session Pale Ale)
